    OP I came out in 2004 & OP II in 2008. The OEF volume, A Different Kind of War, was published in 2010. The second volume, IIRC, is waiting for the final approval for publication. All three form CSI Press. CMH is working on the official history--Tan Books.

    I wonder how many civilian or military leaders (if any) have read the Army's excellent and honest two-volume lessons learned studies of Iraq (On Point series), or even know the key findings?

    1. Don't lie. Saying after 20 years in Afghanistan that you weren't there to do nation building just doesn't add up. It's dishonest. It is fairer to say that it didn't work. It is fine to say we shouldn't try again. But to pretend that nation building was not the aim is false.

    This is what happens when we base our judgments of each other's judgment on status/connections/rank, not on the accuracy of our judgments

    Foreign policy establishment generally doesn't do self-reflection. Leadership and funders don't require it, the focus is inherently future-oriented, and the predictive analysis so unfalsifiable that evaluation is impossible.

    One time there was some serious effort at self-reflection was right after Trump’s victory. But then Trump administration beclowned itself so frequently that any further introspection was overtaken by events.
