NPR this morning talked about how the Black Death was a prelude to the Renaissance & the 1918 pandemic gave way to the Roaring 20s, to suggest that we should be optimistic. Bullshit. Tell that to the generations who lived after the Athenian, Antonine, or Justinianic plagues.

That’s the same terrible take as the people who argue “war is good for the economy” and point to post-WW2 United States. Like...okay? One out of context case, now how about all the other combatants.

‘The survivors enjoyed themselves immensely’ is a hell of a spin on history

hold on, what has the plague ever done for us? The renaissance? Right! Aside from the renaissance and the roaring 20s, what has the plague done for us? I've heard this before, I just can't believe they're being serious.pic.twitter.com/ygrRsdgr5Y

Yeah, but we've already gotten rid of our former guy plague. And already we have Biden and Dr. Fauci. Progress!

Yes, I'm hopeful we'll be able to get ourselves out of the pandemic. But that's not the point I'm making.

I'm would have added Cyprianic plague if the character limit allowed.

Who knows, it could be the tipping point to expanding access to health care and better social safety nets for regular folks. But, knowing this country, probably not.

Indeed. The point is that we can't predict either outcome just because there was a pandemic.
