I became curious about this after I read a joking remark that "people who have less nerdy interests than me are normies, people who have too many nerdy interests are autistic"— what accounts for that impulse to shame either side of the spectrum?

because capitalism teaches people that they have to be an "adult" when they "grow up" and part of adulthood is stability and calmness (read: emotional suppression if you're not already calm). excitement and intense interest is associated with children and playfulness

this is then ran thru a filter of late teens/early adults where a lot of insecurity (which is pretty normal at that age) fosters showboating and bullying of others to get ahead. Part of this is labelling behavior that isn't considered productive "cringe" Imo
