How does one become more companionate to one self?

I don't think self-compassion is possible without deep self-understanding. At least, I was never able to internalize most advice on self-compassion because it felt so cheesy and because I *had* to beat myself up for doing stupid things or acting against my values...right?

Truly understanding the roots of my behavior, even the behaviors and aspects of myself that I resent, has naturally led to self-respect and compassion.

As an example: I used to deal with strong urges to dissociate and procrastinate through mind-numbing amounts of video games and online entertainment. No amount of willpower or self-hate made it stop.

Only later did I realize this strategy felt like a necessity because I thought failing at the source of my procrastination (projects, assignments, etc.) was devastating to my sense of self.

This was a strategy I had to use to avoid working with/through negative emotions because I simply did not have any emotional intelligence or skills taught to me while growing up. I never knew of any healthy alternatives to coping, so I continued to dysfunctionally cope

From within the worldview of these engrained emotions, ALL THE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR IS JUSTIFIED. They may be irrational and counter to my conscious preferences, but they served a purpose.

Recognizing that those purposes were valid and in some ways necessary for me to hold while growing up, but that I have the ability to change and to trust myself to be able to handle difficulty with grace now, was a major turning point in my level of self-compassion and regard.

Thats great insight,
@Meta_Aesthetic, especially realizing that undesired behavior serves a purpose. You should write about that personal experience. I am sure this can help many.0 replies 0 retweets 1 likeThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
