have zero remaining friends that I originally met in high school. have exactly one remaining friend that I originally met in college. almost all of my friends now are from things I started as an adult. how typical is this? is it uncommon? do people hold on to childhood forever?https://twitter.com/TaylorPearsonMe/status/1229485664342806529 …

It does feel like there is a generational difference in the amount of childhood connections we keep—not so uncommon now to not have any friends from when we were kids / teens. In my case I almost forced myself to lose those friendships because it felt like I outgrew them mentally

> "it felt like I outgrew them mentally" this is a major point. I've experienced that very intensely in a lot of relationships and chose to let them fade away on purpose. I guess I'm surprised at how apparently rare that is?

Wow, yeah, I’m glad to hear from someone else who has had the same experience when it is...foreign to most. During childhood I had the distinct sense that all my relationships had an expiration timer, and trying to sustain them past that timer would force a fit that didn’t work.

I’m still working out whether that need to relinquish relationships was out of attachment issues or genuine differentiation from people my age. Wasn’t just that I lost common interests (I’ve kept the same hobbies / media prefs), but there was a more fundamental shift in mindset
