A visual artist is a magician who has laid out every step of the trick before us, the sleight-of-hand left transparent. The paint, the colors, the marks all explain themselves—and yet we are still fooled.
I recently read an excerpt from “The Storytelling Animal” and it is clear that the same applies for all forms of fiction. Willing suspension of disbelief is not quite right to explain it, because there is no *will* involved in such illusions and visions.
