becoming more and more worried about endemic self-loathing. has self-loathing always been endemic and I'm just aware of it now as an adult?

It does seem endemic. At first I wasn’t able to square this with an individualistic and self-aggrandizing culture, but now I realize that self-loathing is just the opposite side of the coin of self-worship. It is very hard to keep one without the shadow of the other side.
