  1. Tired: Twitter is just a cesspool for lowest-common-denominator, angry lizard-brain takes Wired: Twitter is a playground where you can learn how to speak to lizard-brains for shits and giggles

I think that viewing purity through this frame of seeking simplicity gives me more understanding of how it works as a moral value for others. Before, I was mostly confused by why it was involved in moral judgment and how irrational it seems.

In the search for ideological purity (having all the right opinions, being perfectly woke, etc.) there is an underlying desperation for things to be simple, for there to be lasting clarity about what is righteous and important.

Purity judgments draw simple distinctions between what is contaminated and not. Sometimes that judgment comes down to purity of race/class/other personal traits, as if purging people who were the wrong color would somehow erase all troubles in the world.

I was trying to understand the way that purity acts as a moral value beyond physical disgust (re: Moral Foundations Theory)—and realized that as an ideological / epistemic value, it is meant to eliminate paradox and uncomfortable ambiguities. It’s the urge to keep life simple.

Relieved to find out I’m not the only person who spends over 10 minutes trying to plot out a 280 character message! Often feels harder for me to condense my writing into brief notes in the first place, though

Been tempted to make a spreadsheet briefly describing the people I meet, but it would seem creepy / overkill...

I have terrible memory for both the faces and names of people I've met, but it seems like such a base-level social skill that it is difficult to discuss improving it with others.

Decided to ask because I'm curious about general experiences with face and name memory—have your abilities to hold onto these kinds of details gotten better or worse over time? Are you better at one or the other? Is it something you've deliberately tried to improve or change?

How good are you at remembering people’s faces / names?

An insight I'm trying to apply when I get caught up in rage-contagion on the internet (quote from Spectrum of Ecstasy):

The mockery of the young can actually come from concern, but a sincere expression of that concern and worry for someone else would mean reflecting on the actual causes of the issue. And it feels like so many modern, complex issues hinge on diffuse collective responsibility

I feel like this partially explains the division between boomer parents and their children on climate and sociopolitical issues.

It's a lot easier to just tell others to toughen the fuck up than to admit the pain and guilt of harming them with the unintended consequences of your own actions.

How much time do you spend formulating your Twitter hot takes?

I recently read an excerpt from “The Storytelling Animal” and it is clear that the same applies for all forms of fiction. Willing suspension of disbelief is not quite right to explain it, because there is no *will* involved in such illusions and visions.

A visual artist is a magician who has laid out every step of the trick before us, the sleight-of-hand left transparent. The paint, the colors, the marks all explain themselves—and yet we are still fooled.

But positive emotional states have so much more depth and breadth than that superficial correlation suggests. Seems to me that we're about as skeptical of radical joy / exultation as we are of deep depression or grief.

It seems almost perverse to be happy without such markings of success (wealth, beauty, status, etc.), and when happiness is labeled as a "normie value," it makes sense that people will begin to resent the wish to attain it.
