I want to know what is true, and act out what is good; may the two never conflict.

I'm following the advice of and posting 100 things in 100 days. Let's give it a go. Today is Day 1. The advice is here, and is excellent (not because I already agree but because it's interesting and novel) What say you, ?

Day 26: "Wherever you look, there's something to see" is so much more than a platitude. If you actually pay attention, even the simplest, "least interesting" things become fascinating.

Day 25: Socrates: Then you are entirely unacquainted with them [the Sophists]? Anytus: And I have no wish to be acquainted. Socrates: Then, my dear friend, how can you know whether a thing is good or bad of which you are wholly ignorant? (From Plato's "Meno")

Day 24: A useful exercise is to give yourself advice as though you were giving it to a friend you care deeply about. What would you suggest "they" do in this situation? The hard part is taking your own advice seriously, as though it was given by a friend you care deeply about.

Day 23: Today felt like a bad day, from the inside. So here are some things I'm grateful for: 1) I safely flew home from a week in Berlin; 2) My friends worked together to solve a problem at the airport; 3) ... Need to write these lists more often.

Day 22: There's a meme going around saying today (02/02/2020) is the only palindrome date for the next millennium (wait for 03/03/3030). But already next year, we'll have 12/02/2021. Just the latest in "people don't think about things even for a second before sharing them".

Day 21: When I get sick, and my plans are interupted by a miserable day in bed, I like to remind myself how lucky I am: Today, I lay in a warm bed and drink orange juice; 500 years ago my flu would have a significant chance of ending my life.

Day 20: What I like about , besides his trying to solve global problems, is that he's a person. He's rich and powerful, but I get the sense that he's confusedly navigating life just like all of us, in contrast to the pristine polish of other public figures. Good song.

Day 19: Don't make yourself difficult to love. Be the sort of person that everyone wants to be kind to, that everyone wishes to succeed.

Day 18: People are for sure overreacting to the in terms of their personal likelihood of contracting it. But on net it might be a societal benefit for people to overreact to things like this.

Day 17 (40 mins late): In science, as in life, if you say of your interlocutor that you "can't understand how they could believe [X]", that reflects badly on you more than on them.

Day 16: My humble, personal list. Most interesting topics from , which changed my thinking significantly: spiritual experience; meditation; free will; lying. Least interesting topics, which I'd be ok to hear less about: Islam / Hijabs; Trump; "woke" / culture war.

Day 15: Things that should never have to be spoken (because they're obviously true always): 1) "I could be wrong, but..." 2) "I don't agree with *everything* she says, but..." 3) "You could save up to 30% or more!"

Day 14 (missed Day 13): Been backpacking this weekend in the Eilat Mountains, at the far south border of Israel. It's a beautiful place and I'm grateful to spend time there.

Day 12 (missed Day 11): Hiking / backpacking always brings to mind useful life lessons: Make plans, but adjust (you can't plan for everything). Step confidently but with care. Share what you have with (and accept help from) others. Will likely write a post about it next week.

Day 10: When enumerating the benefits and harms of alcohol, people often leave out what I see as a key unique upside: it's like a reset button for my brain. After a night of drinking I wake up a blank slate, much more so than a good night's sleep. Maybe still not worth it. 🤷

Day 9: I have yet to meet one of these moral mutants of pure selfishness and evil. Maybe some exist, but they're always far away, doing bad things that never require me to talk to them. In the meantime I meet many confused and weary people trying to navigate a difficult universe.

Day 8: If you would have told me 10y ago that Democrats would be the party of Deontology, and Republicans the party of Utilitarianism, I'd have thought you crazy. (Not saying either of them is doing those moral philosophies *well*, just based on words that exit their mouths.)

Day 7: It's fascinating to me how my mood hardly correlates with actual experiences. Sometimes I wake up with energy into a world that seems bright and happy; other times, the inverse. Usually the days aren't different, but I am.

Day 6: If I'm not careful this 100 day challenge will consist only in pointing out all the days I failed to write something. I've listened to this 5-hour podcast now twice, and am likely to listen again. It's a deep dive into the nature of consciousness.
