I actually was not familiar with the rumors, however apparently many of my colleagues were. So the obvious is asked: WHY DID THEY DO NOTHING
What would you suggest someone do?
I know if I had known something like that at the university where I taught I would have been legally obligated to report it. If the Met knew (how could they not) I hold them responsible.
Yeah, the Met administration has known all along. Parents reported it and were silenced by them. If a colleague reports it, the colleague becomes a squeaky wheel and will not be hired to sing or play down the road. One friend of mine who did speak up lost his opportunities there.
I hold the administration highly responsible. I would hope they all lose their jobs. I know the fear bit for the "hired help" (musicians). I'm just so very, very angry. We have become such a callous people. Or, okay, humans have always been this way, I suppose. Sigh.
This has been known forever. What the Met needs to do is not only get Levine the hell out of there, but see who has been enabling and covering for him all this time and give them the boot too.
The talent agencies know where all the skeletons are buried but choose to stay quiet - there are many more abusive personalities out there in the classical music racket....

What does the Swiss flag stand for here???
I thought no one would ever ask - the Swiss flag stands for tongue-in-cheek neutrality (or unbiased opinion)

If only you were ‘disturbed’ enough to do something about it at *any* point in the last 30+ years while so much of the classical world had been talking about it.
It comes a bit late. The rumours were already there in the 80ties and if they reached me, a bassoon student in the South of Germany, would one think they were known in N.Y. too. And as much as I admire his talent: It wouldn't rectify abuse and covering up for him.
The rumours also reached me in Vienna in the early 80ties. I was a very young dancer when I heard about first. How could it be, around the world everybody knew, just the Met didn't? I really cannot believe it.
Translation: We were successful at keeping the rumors quiet for DECADES. After the #HarveyWeinstein, #CharlieRose, #MattLauer scandals, we were no longer able to keep the #NYTimes at bay. Now we're in damage control PR-spin mode. #BeBRAVE #SupportTheArts
Careful soul-searching is needed in #classicalmusic, as it has begun in so many others. #Abuse can no longer be swept under the rug of genius. Enablers are #complicit and must be held accountable. #BeBRAVE #SupportTheArts
Stop acting shocked, @MetOpera. This has been common knowledge for YEARS. If I heard about it, you heard about it.
I'm shocked, SHOCKED, to find that gambling is going on here!
You're at the epicenter and you've never heard a single word? How can we explain that more than 500 miles from New York were rumors of it in the 1990s?
I was living in Milwaukee in the 80s and heard about it.
