I did fieldwork for my research in Yemen and the UK, none of the Muslims I spoke to recognized the term Islamism. Its a western concept one of them said to me. One leader was clear he was a Salafi, but not an Islamist.

For those that are interested in the Islamism/piety debate, I am not sure there are any easy solutions to the debate. There are different opinions depending on approach. It made me go back again and read Hassan al-Banna. Most important is that Islamism is a poor term.

I think we have to see that a person can be jihadi believer without being a practicing Muslim. Therefore, the word "Islamist" should not be used as a general term for jihadis.

Half a year has past since the five orphans were brought to Norway from the detention camp in Syria. "Things are going very well with them, seen in light of what they have experienced".,

If you have comments on the attacker and mental health, please let me know. I see an important area here that is not being addressed. This is just as much a mental health problem, as a security problem.

So far the knife attacker seems to belong in a grey area of mental health. Social services did not manage to rescue him. Smoking cannabis regularly and he got fixated on Jihadism. Not sure this has much to do with religion.

"Amman was 'strange' and prone to mood swings and jihadist outbursts. He added: 'I've served time with a lot of convicted terrorists, but this guy was definitely the scariest – his eyes had no life in them.' ",

Another fucked-up druggy. Cannabis is 'part' of the problem. Easier to program is they're zonked out of the heads!

In the case of the knife attacker, it is a question of how did the drugs affect him? and was his obsession something more? His cellmate said: "He was definitely insane, and he did not hide it.",

There seems to be little research on the link between lone actor terrorism and the use of drugs. "males who used cannabis more than once a week were 3 x as likely to experience suicidal thoughts or attempts compared to males who did not use cannabis",

If Amman was smoking cannabis regularly, it is likely he would have got access to cannabis in prison. We have to go back in his life and see what made him search for extremist content on the net. When he was so open about his violent extremist ideas, someone must have known.
