We have had one of our dogs for 10 years. Last fall we spent 7 thousand dollars when she needed emergency gallbladder surgery. We are fortunate enough to be able to cover that and would do it again but we're not everyone.

Also, be prepared to handle their separation anxiety if you don’t normally work from home and eventually plan on returning to work. Again, not a reason not to get a companion, but something to consider!

I would never trade anything for my pup, pets essentially make you a parent and there are sacrifices that need to be made. But the sheer amount of love they give you is worth it all. If someone can’t keep up those sacrifices, please don’t adopt.
