It's difficult to perceive negative reactions to influencers of any size getting free games/merchandise/hardware as anything other than jealousy.

Earned it in what way? By people palatable to brands? By evangelizing a product so hard it was difficult to ignore? I don’t care about the free stuff (most of it seems like useless trinkets) but sometimes it’s hard to take that person’s opinion seriously on X game.
This changes significantly based on the community/product! YOU may not take that person's opinion seriously on X game, but perhaps you are not the goal in this instance. Casting a wide net means appealing to some that won't appeal to others.

I have to imagine people like me, who pay attention to working conditions, various phobias, and sexual harassment scandals, are never gonna be the target audience lol

This is actually an interesting point. There are lots of people even in the space who put in the same hours, have bigger audiences, etc. but focus on things that don't fall into "marketable" for the companies... so saying that receiving "free things" is a result of one's—
