It's difficult to perceive negative reactions to influencers of any size getting free games/merchandise/hardware as anything other than jealousy.

The thing about smaller communities getting opportunities, its important to understand that companies (including Twitch) takes into account the influence of a community.

Have you ever seen a twitter account with 80K followers but nobody comments/likes? Brands are often more interested in an account with a dedicated following. This is more nuanced to judge, but typically revolves around consistency, interaction, and steady growth.

“Fun” part is it’s actually the opposite problem: People who’ve paid money for a thing or emotionally invested in it will overrate it to avoid the cognitive dissonance of having invested in something they don’t like.

Science strongly disagrees with this. There’s a reason why marketing is a billion dollar industry. Knowing you’re being marketed to makes no difference. Companies aren’t giving you free stuff out of charity. It’s the same reason lobbyists give politicians things.

From the outside, I feel like there could be a difference between the Gamespot situation where there are editors and peers to help maintain integrity over reviews/ impressions vs an individual who doesn’t have someone looking over their shoulder.

The difference would be that at GameSpot you were paid a wage independent of any input from advertiser's. Small streamers may totally be at the behest of freebies from PR or liscencing deals with producers. Does this influence their opinions? Hard to gauge.

Actually maybe you already covered this in your later tweets. I'm desperately trying not be a reply guy here.

With all respect these companies give influencers free stuff because they believe that it works to their benefit. And it probably does work, at least on some people, or else these companies would end that practice.

Lol isn't that the argument politicians give? Yes we recieve donations from Healthcare companies but it doesn't influence me at all. Also no Healthcare for people and tax relief for giant Healthcare corporations.

Anyone can give this argument, you, me, your dentist. The value is in the honor of the person making it. If you don't think that person has honor, don't believe them. I saw this place with my own eyes for years, and I believe the people I saw have integrity, that was enough.
