It made sense a long time ago. President Lincoln lost the popular vote but won Electoral vote. He didn't even appear on 9 southern state ballots. But populations have shifted so it's kind of buns now.

I truly don't understand the modern need for it. It needs a complete overhaul.

the whole concept of federal elections being run by the states is insanely stupid. Different voting qualifications, potentially different candidates on the ballot, different levels of voting access. Not to mention state winner takes all and not each vote has an equal weight

No, it's one of the best things for our country. If we wanted to pick the same party and have no choice that is what you would have if we got rid of it. No real american should be for this.

If a party wants to get elected it should adopt policies that help the people and not rely on gerrymandering and other underhanded BS. The electoral college doesn't give them reason to tho.
