People focus way too much on scores, especially critic scores. Peer review is so much better. If your friend says it's good you should play, go play it.

Unless your friend doesn't share your tastes and a critic does (such things have been known to happen). I think the real lesson here is to find people with opinions on games that you trust, whether they are critics, your friends, or the guy holding up a sign on the street corner.
