I’ve had a lot of media jobs, so my memory is fuzzy on the older salaries, but this is my best guess: 1UP: 45k MTV: 50k (“Permalancer”) G4: 55k EGM: 72k Giant Bomb: 65k (no raise over 4 years, iirc) Kotaku: 77k Waypoint: 90k Today: $100k, thanks to yearly union pay raises.

How DID you live in SF with that pay?!

This conversation is really eye opening. I always assumed that people I saw on major outlets (celebrities, more or less) were making a pretty good living. It's no wonder that a lot of games journalists graduate to working in the industry.

It's nearly criminal to offer someone 50k for SF. Rent would be half of that.

Before I joined Giant Bomb, I interviewed at GamePro and their offer was barely over what I had made when I started at 1UP right out of college. I politely turned it down and made clear I was owed more, and was told (on the call!) that I should be “grateful” for the offer.

That is bonkers, such a shame really. I've wanted to leave the current industry I'm in and pivot into gaming because that's what I've ways wanted, but I know it will be a huge sacrifice financially and I don't want to put that burden on my wife.

Like, how far out from the bay area would 50k a year be liveable? (why do I feel like that's Utah or Idaho)
-
Fremont is your best bet, but its a long long BART ride
