This is a stretch here Ben. Many aspects of your job is encourage and discourage different types of game design based on your knowledge and expertise. At what point is 'difficulty' untouchable because it takes a developers agency away? What takes 'difficulty' off the table?

Difficulty is taken off the table when it is fundamental to everything else in the game. When it is core to the directors vision. You are asking them to compromise their art, which is not fair. RDR2 could add a mode that lets people select missions and skip everything else, but..

that compromises rockstars vision for the game even though it would be easy and may make the game better for many people who don't want the things in between the missions. The artist is creating a certain experience in their mind and you can tag along with them or not.

We ask developers to compromise their art all the time for the sake of inclusivity. Imagine an artist making all the art for a game and then finding out people who are colorblind can't play. If he compromises his original colors to include more players, did he lose his vision?

I'd also like to add that the developer has never explicitly stated that the game has to be hard, only that the player should feel accomplishment from perseverance. Certainly players can experience that on different levels.
