I don't know how relevant this is for Sekiro, but for Dark Souls, the difficulty is very much part of the narrative, so it's kind of essential. I still think it should have an easy mode though. I'll never touch it, but as long as it's optional, doesn't bother me.
This is a stretch here Ben. Many aspects of your job is encourage and discourage different types of game design based on your knowledge and expertise. At what point is 'difficulty' untouchable because it takes a developers agency away? What takes 'difficulty' off the table?

Difficulty is taken off the table when it is fundamental to everything else in the game. When it is core to the directors vision. You are asking them to compromise their art, which is not fair. RDR2 could add a mode that lets people select missions and skip everything else, but..

that compromises rockstars vision for the game even though it would be easy and may make the game better for many people who don't want the things in between the missions. The artist is creating a certain experience in their mind and you can tag along with them or not.

But why the easier thing? That's what I don't quite understand. If you can add accessibility options, or solve on the hardware side (Xbox Adaptive), and make it so people can play the game and it still be the way the devs intended, why is that not enough?

Also, every game can't can't adhere to that design philosophy. I've asked this before, but how would you make an easy mode for Tetris 99?

For me, bad or good game design is *very* different to game difficulty. There will be games I'll never be able to play because they're too difficult, but other people can play them just fine. I can watch those people play them if I want to experience the game still.
