Colleagues had a car broken into and laptops stolen in downtown Mountain View last night while we were at dinner. We wondered how they knew to break into the hatchback when it is not see- through. They turn on bluetooth scanners and follow the beacon to find electronics.

Last time my car was broken into, the thieves just broke into a lot of cars in the lot: some they got nothing, some they got laptops, some they got other stuff. Why invest in detection when breaking in is free and easy?

seems obvious to me. minimize investment of time and risk. only break into known good targets.

Weren't the laptops in sleep? I haven't checked but I'd imagine the bluetooth isn't beaconing when the laptop lid is closed. Did they break the windows? My guess is it was just left unlocked or they know a way to bypass the lock and are checking every car.

Perhaps, but laptops have always been notoriously easy to rob. They should not have left the laptops unsecured.

laptops are...easy to rob? in what way? I'd guess most folks have left valuables in a locked trunk of a car and expected that they are reasonably safe.
