Robertson: Why should allergists worry about sleep?
-Our patients with allergy disorders (eczema, hives, etc) have disordered sleep
-35-40% Americans do not get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep per night. 15% report less than 6 hours per night.

Recent study published showed a pooled estimate of biphasic reactions to be about 4%, much less than previously reported 20% and seems to be much more in line with what we see clinically. #ACAAI21
: Healthcare providers can provide reputable information to help combat misinformation (that DOES impact patients decision-making) via your practice website and social media. #ACAAI21
's final thoughts: "Think like a patient" to understand them better, proactively ask patient about common areas of misinformation, and discuss the evidence (but don't dumb down the science for patients) #ACAAI21
: Recognize that health literacy can be lacking. Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health info needed to make appropriate health decisions. #ACAAI21
: Shared decision-making is a useful approach with #foodallergy patients. Explore w/patients evidence, understanding of risk evaluation, what impacts their decisions, and where they find info impacting decision-making. #ACAAI21
Healthcare (& behavioral healthcare) providers can help patients best by knowing how patients gain information, anticipating Qs/concerns, and being prepared to address them. Ask permission to and make discussing the hard/complex topics part of every encounter w/patients #ACAAI21
: Science evolves, which explains why information changes. Recommends healthcare providers make facts their hook with patients.
My thoughts for patients: Facts help address #anxiety and uncertainty, so don't be afraid to ask your doctors for the facts! #ACAAI21
