Honestly the way I've always looked at it is if you speak broken English because it's your second language then you're more developed than many by default. Either way it's dumb for people to maliciously make fun of someone trying to communicate.

My main language is German and there are way more rules in it then English

And I can only recommend watching TV shows and movies in English not French. It helps you a lot.
