here's the problem with art criticism: if you're going to say something is good, you have to be clear on what your metric is for goodness

the reason we get caught up in subjective vs objective debates is because everyone (critic or not) has criteria but NEVER makes it explicit

and this is also why it is difficult to parse when something is considered good because it's effective at being fashionable vs at "art"

goodness in art, btw, is always a function of effectiveness. but "effective at what" & "should things be effective at that" varies hugely

dumb example: "art should make me laugh"->"someone getting punched in the face makes me laugh"->art with that is good(er)

w/ that explicit, suddenly you can intervene: should art make you laugh? for what purpose? why does punching make you laugh? should it? why?
