THREAD: We honor and remember those whose lives were stolen on 9/11. But we need to have a real conversation that this was a turning point that fast tracked us down the road we're on. Whatever values we thought we held sacred as Americans, we abandoned for false security.

The post 9/11 mentality birthed the modern surveillance state and the militarization of police.
That same mentality saw the creation of DHS that has played a massive role in carrying out human rights abuses at the border. The language of protecting us from terrorists still used by the Trump administration and those seeking to justify our inhumane immigration policies.
The choices made in the immediate aftermath led us to wars our next generation is inheriting, the massive expansion of the military industrial complex, and trillions taken out of building an equitable America. We sanctioned torture, decimated foreign lands and are no safer.
So when we "never forget" let's remember that we didn't just lose lives and iconic buildings. We voluntarily traded away the values we claimed to hold and planted the seeds that have blossomed into America standing at the threshold of autocracy. Did we win "the war on terror"?
