I don't always find it easy talking about how hard it was for me growing up raised by a single mom and my abuela, living in a 1 bedroom apt. When you don't have a lot of money you spend a lot of time hiding that out of embarrassment and doing your best to fit in.
Now I find myself running for Congress & as uncomfortable as it still is, I do my best to acknowledge that truth b/c there's another me out there right now and I know what it's like. Look kid you got nothing to be ashamed of. The system sucks, but together we're gonna fix it.
Wish I would’ve had this example as a kid. When my formerly stay-at-home-mom left my dad, raising 3 kids on minimum wage meant bouncing between relatives & living in a trailer park. Being ashamed of not being like the rest of your classmates is rough, but def ‘builds character’.
Gotta change this whole mindset. As children, we are taught to be embarrassed because of our families economic condition, if it’s not ideal. It’s not my fault, I’m just a kid. Fuck capitalism.
