accepting 2020 cfps now: who wants to hear me talk about my journey into compute/cloud optimization? I've spent the last few months on: - app CPU profiling - JVM / memory tuning - library opt imprvmts - k8s sidecar imprvmts - detecting poorly tuned autoscaling for k8s services

this could be an "in the weeds" talk, but so much of these can be distilled down to general lessons to pass on to your engineering organization 👌

Developers: *Build terrible monolith* "This isn't working. Let's try something else" Developers: *Build terrible microservices* "Wait—this isn't working either."

if you're a tab hoarder, you should be using a task manager instead 🤷‍♀️

Finally, I track the perceived productivity of the full maker days and split maker days and iterate from there based on identified factors 🤓

Here is some math explaining why I think this works: - the average office worker goes to work 20 days/month - due to meetings/distractions, these days are not maker optimized - I work 12-15 days per month of *just* maker time - I work 5-8 days which are not maker-optomized

In March, I plan on reducing the number of SF / Bay Area home office days based on how Feb goes!

The meetings I have will change over time with the projects, but this works for now. Based on the results of this experiment, in Feb I will be going to Seattle, NYC, and Barcelona while completing a 4-6 week climbing training program 💪

In jan I ran a experiment on working remotely as a software engineer while climbing at red rocks near vegas, here's what I learned: 🍵 clean, strong caffeine (matcha) 💻 set aside 4 hours for coding in the morning 🧗‍♀️ climb from lunch to sunset ✉️ email/slack in the evening

“You don’t need Kubernetes” Until... You’re asked to resize all your VMs cause they’re all at 10% utilization... should have used Kubernetes. /1

Go has quite a lot of things going for it all right: - blazingly fast builds (I miss this the most) - I can open a file of Go code and almost always understand what it’s doing - usable concurrency - static binaries that allowed for easy deployment What’s not to like?

⏲️ As of today, we have about eighteen years to go until the Y2038 problem occurs. But the Y2038 problem will be giving us headaches long, long before 2038 arrives. I'd like to tell you a story about this.

BREAKING: for the past several years has been relying on undergrads to teach a majority of classes in the Computer Sci (ECCS) department oftentimes for little to NO wages yesterday an arbitrator ruled, at our behest, that UCB OWES the workers more than $5 MILLION
