I didn't see this as a "mansplaining" situation; rather just someone trying to engage in conversation. To me it was more a humorous example of how bad media reporting on AI has affected people's perception of what computers can actually do. 2/n

I had indeed seen these ridiculous media reports on the "out-of-control" communicating computers that had to be "shut down" by Facebook. I was surprised to hear that people actually believed this (or maybe didn't know what to believe). 3/n

I related this coffeeshop incident as a way to highllight how those of us who do research in and/or teach AI and ML really need to step up and to educate the public about the field. 4/n

We also need to make a bigger effort to make sure the media doesn't misrepresent AI research or accomplishments, and to clearly refute such representations when they happen. 5/n
