When you give an algorithmic prediction of future offending to a judge to use in felony sentencing, she may use it in unexpected ways... Tweet summary of my new paper with "Algorithmic Risk Assessment in the Hands of Humans" 1/

Excited that my article (co-authored with ) that examines whether patent examiners procrastinate and the effects of such procrastination on the quality of patent review is in print at the Journal of Public Economics!

  3. What’s your favorite RCT with judges or lawyers? Either vignette study or otherwise? Looking for good teaching examples.

Interesting article implies that "clean-slate" policy impacts are likely very distilled. Thesis: the internet means "expungement isn’t really expungement anymore."

An exercise in framing: "To size up the threat of so-called reidentification attacks, the Census Bureau tried to reverse-engineer the 2010 census results. Officials were able to correctly identify just 17 percent of the original 309 million records." vs 1/

What a jerk. No homeowner complained. These were "sting" operations that encouraged a house painter to also lay some tile and then arrested the handyperson for not having a tile laying occ. license.

New paper with Jon Gruber in JELS on defensive medicine in obstetrical care. Most med mal studies can’t speak to liability’s overall effects. To fill this gap, Jon and I look to the effects of liability immunity. 1/2.

This review was a bit of a love letter from me to economics. The econ toolkit gives us the power to understand the causes of disparities and find ways to reduce them. We're not at the mercy of market forces when we understand what drives them and how to redirect them.

Assuming authors actually have no idea what a p-value is, what is the probability they would have come up with definitions *at least* as wrong as these (under some assumptions about the Definition Generating Process)?

Bail scholars: The excessive bail clause prohibits bail higher than necessary to ensure appearance. Does this apply to unsecured bail as well? RT please

When I was in my 20s I was part of a music composition group. On the appointed Saturday, we would wake up and try and compose and record 20 songs in a day, getting together that night to share. It was a total creativity explosion! I’ve always wanted to try that with research.

One way to think about moods is to see each mood as corresponding to a personality type. Vacillating between them (as opposed to holding one fixedly) means that you take in more information: you "sample" the world from a (diachronically variegated) series of points of view.
