Free public transit will dramatically increase economic development. Having a charge for public transit heavily impairs economic growth. Allowing lower income individuals the chance to get jobs beyond the point where it would be too expensive (with a charge) lifts all boats.

Paying for public transit is a tax on the working class.

I get that you're joking but this is a serious proposal thats being tested around the US and Europe right now and showing very promising results.

I wish i could find it but there was a small city that decided to abolish transit fares and because of the expensive apparatuses used to process payments, they realized that it was actually cheaper to let people ride for free.

Something similar happened in Tacoma WA. They wanted to institute paid road side parking, much like Seattle WA has nearby. Once Tacoma implemented it, they LOST money due to the cost of the new infrastructure in place, maintaining it, and processing payments.

But...gasoline isn’t free, bus drivers don’t drive for free and vehicles can’t be maintained for free. I don’t expect to be able to drive my own car for free. Why should those who use the services not assist in paying for their use and upkeep?

Taxes. It would be paid by taxes. Same as how public schools and public libraries are free.
