90s kid here...there is no way in heaven or hades you got a person who is between 22 and 31 who has 'no idea how to take a message on the phone'. The story is either years old, the person is not a good fit, or your glengarry glen ross environment had them running for the hills.

tbf I’m a “geriatric millennial” and avoid using the phone whenever possible, to the irritation of my older coworkers (I’m the youngest in my group by several years, only two Gen X). I did also work admin and hotel front desk in my 20s and did fine taking messages.
