People positing face paint as "self-care" (rather than, say, self-loathing, which would seem more logical) is something I abhor
Looking back, when I came out as trans it was a breath of fresh air to no longer have femininity pushed onto me. It took "I'm actually a boy" for people in my own family to respect my feelings and wishes. Come on parents, just let your girls be! Stop pushing things on them!

I feel this. I fought my whole life against women trying to 'dress me up'. Countless times saying no to the dress, heels, hair, makeup - and pure misery when I give in. It's not 'girl power', it's making me anxious thinking about it. Gender conformity is a cage for women.

Why is it always parents to blame? I'm sorry if that was your case. We made it a point to emphasize she could be anything she wanted, had her choice of toys, activities and pointedly never mentioned looks beyond hygiene and basic grooming. Peers had an enormous impact on her.

I never even bought my daughter a doll until she asked for one when she was 8 (specifically, American Girl). I let her play with what she wanted, she picked her own clothes, styled her own hair when she was old enough. I threatened to cut it short if she didn’t brush it.

Children yearn for acceptance and inclusion so others opinions are everything to them. That gets even stronger in young teens until they find their own voice and self-confidence. The home is vital to nurturing that individual confidence.

I am so grateful that my parents were entirely cool with the fact that their wee science loving doll hating stuff disassembling nascent coder nerdling happens to be female. They never pressured me to conform, which gave me the strength to resist those who did.
