To be honest I think an unfortunate fact is that even if the Tavistock did actively suggest and offer "other options" no distressed child is going to choose that. This is why I don't think those medical interventions should be available for people under 18 full stop.
Children do not have the mental capacity to make such big decisions like interrupting puberty and potentially becoming locked into being a life-long patient. They just don't. I didn't. Even at 18 it can be risky to allow it, but it's better at least.
When you're a kid you think you know it all, but you're still growing - even in your twenties, you don't know where you'll end up. How those huge decisions be made at such an uncertain time? Without ever allowing yourself to grow into your body first?
Too young for alcohol, too young to smoke, too young to drive, too young to vote, too young for tattoos, too young to join the Armed Forces etc., but somehow old enough to decide to change their body permanently.
