Relative of mine, ardent leftist, rails incessantly against Republicans, talks as if they are all billionaires, ergo evil. (Senior tech guy; rich by any standard outside SV.) I always assumed this was hyperbole… TIL maybe he actually believes it.https://twitter.com/JohnHolbein1/status/990251578048307200 …

curious how far off the stats would be if you limited it to, say, personal-max-out presidential campaign donors.

I saw some study in the last week or so that said something like the more you know and care about politics, the more inaccurate your factual beliefs about policy issues are. So… yeah.

haha, but I meant "limit" the other direction: we know that the donor/doorknocker tier of the parties will be disproportionately richer and gayer than the party rolls at large, but is it by enough to make those public guesses no longer off by an order of magnitude?

I think this is the right way to think about how the respondents think about it. when they’re asked about “republicans” they think of a highly representative subset. I wonder if they also asked what percentage of the adult population are republicans

I also wonder how significant it is that the 250k question is the only one where the most political people were actually closer to the truthpic.twitter.com/HHeuTYhry1

I’ve seen it elsewhere, I think in Democracy for Realists. there it wasn’t quite that more partisan means more wrong, it was more that more partisan means closer to the party line, which is sometimes right and sometimes wrong depending on the issue

That would make a lot of sense. OTOH, as both parties have become more extreme in the past decade, both are probably more often wrong than previously.
