This is absolutely true, and yet I'm really glad that I started with systematic Stage 4 approaches to meditation like MCTB or The Mind Illuminated that made it clear both that meditation would lead to tangible changes and that it was somewhat understandable.

That makes sense! One of the individual differences is whether people do well with a systematic approach initially, or not :) I do think having those available is really important.
