Well, to the extent that it holds that there *is* a single normative criterion, I would categorize it as rationalist (and mistaken imo).

It would be helpful partly so that any criticism of “rationalism” is not taken as a criticism of the LW-ish community; and partly as an acknowledgement that few if any of the ideas are new—although the LW-ish versions do have a particular flavor to them.

Rationalists are very aware of “rationalism” as a different body of thought from ours that frustratingly has a similar name. I know it’s confusing & I’m sorry! But blame decision science, not us - they chose to use the word rational for utility maximization, & we followed suit

Right… there’s actually many, many different things termed “rationalism.” My definition is an attempt to capture the general gestalt or family resemblance of the class… but inevitably for many it doesn’t fit very well.

I agree. 'Rationality' as used in LW, decision theory, game theory, instrumental rationality, and philosophy of economics does have mathematical qualities that distinguish the idea slightly from older uses, but the intent of the concept always extends the ancient discussion.
