Rationalists seem to often use a third-ish definition, which is sort of just "effective thinking". This meaning shows up here, although of course the word "systematized" creates a confusion with your top-right quadrant.https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/4ARtkT3EYox3THYjF/rationality-is-systematized-winning …

Thanks! A rationalist also pointed me at this page. As so often with EY’s writing, I have no idea what he’s talking about here; even after reading it several times. It’s striking how different presentations work for different people.

meta-rationality a toroid in an orthogonal axis in the top two quadrants? ha!

Yeah, that’s actually a pretty good analogy!

Just out of curiosity, where would you place rationality based on rational choice theory (+ expected utility) from economics versus rationality based on certain normative/philosophical claims generally outside that economic theory (fairness, relevance of context)?
-
Well, rational choice theory is highly formal, and could be applied more accurately or less so. It could be in either right quadrant depending on how well it fits a situation. If there’s a formal theory of fairness or context, it could be on the right side; otherwise left.
