I wonder if 'rationalist subsects sure of the Absolute Truth' is more of a US thing than an anywhere else thing - what do you think?
I don’t know… I think most are pretty international… this was prompted partly by my trying to get a grip on Critical Rationalism, which seems to be principally British. The Berkeley sect is currently noisy on the internet, but probably insignificant in historical terms.

sorry, whether your reference to British 'Critical Rationalism' intersects in any way with 'continental rationalism'/'British Empiricism' as per the fragment mentioning Berkeley.
Oh, that’s funny! Different Berkeley: Berkeley, California, home to a contemporary rationalist sect. I’m quite fond of them, although I think their religious certainty is misplaced. Their flagship web site is https://www.lesswrong.com which has much good stuff on it.
“Critical Rationalism” is the sect founded by Karl Popper, a philosopher of science.
No; he was trying to work out from logical first principles how science ought to work. But it doesn’t work that way (if my understanding of his story is correct).
I think so, his concern for scientific method - one would have thought science pulls itself up by its own bootstraps rather than basing itself in immutable laws ('absolute truths').
