I've been reading @DavidDeutschOxf on this subject. "No one has ever managed to formulate a 'principle of induction' that is usable in practice for obtaining scientific theories from experience" and "inductivism is false".

Yup. All existing general theories of induction are clearly false, and there’s strong reasons to think no version can work, a priori. OTOH, induction clearly often works in practice. So we also need an account of how and when and why.

What I’m not seeing in the Critical Rationality tradition, so far, is a workable account of how scientific theories do get confirmed in practice. (Which clearly does happen and is important, contra Popper’s early views.) Maybe @DavidDeutschOxf has a good story about this?

My take is that we can’t get a general account or ultimate “why does this work, logically.” But by examining specific cases of successful science, we can see how diverse specific methods work in their specific context.

Induction does not work, logically- in fact it is logically impossible. It is a narrative people tell themselves after they've decided their observations are obvious. Which *parts* of a repeated observation are important to a theory? The answer lies in a priori theory.

I agree with that. What worked-out account of how a priori theory does this do you favor?

I'm an iterated "conjecture and refutation" man myself. ;) If we trace our guess-and-check structure back to infancy, we run into the "singularity" of genetic "knowledge", with instinctual expectations, etc. Frankly, if I had an explanation in any more detail I'd write an AGI.

Well, I guess that leads to two questions. What are the criteria for refutation (given that single counterexamples are empirically inadequate)? And, among infinitely many possible conjectures, how do you choose which to hold tentatively, and/or to expose to experiment?
