it's, uh, pretty actively promoting clannish exclusionary behavior in hobbies and promotes viewing any newcomers as potential threats, which seems kind of bad tbh -- kind of an express ticket to the Model Train ghetto for any community.

Well, there’s a tradeoff there. For a subculture to remain creative, it has to avoid appropriation and dilution, and too-rapud growth. Otoh, it also has to avoid narrowing and cliquishness. I tried to express both dangers in the discussion.
