I’ve never read an article that can explain the difference between Sunni and Shia in religious rather than tribal terms. And, as an outsider, the difference between Judaism and Islam seems infinitesimal to me.
I seem to be missing the point here. This seems to be about tribal identity per se, not about “values”? My impression is that “values” are noble-sounding abstractions that are used to justify tribal actions (but do not meaningfully differ between individuals).

My point (which doesn't appear to be anyone else's point) is that the tribes don't talk about values, they talk about tribes. Outsiders (us), trying to explain why they don't just talk out their differences, label the things-that-can't-be-agreed-on "values".

I do agree with that! With the caveat that *recently* some tribes (the US red/blue split most obviously) have started using the term “values” explicitly. I don’t know the history of this. I vaguely think it came into vogue in the 1970s, but that could be quite wrong.
