“Values” are a local and recent myth. Passage from an insightful essay on the illness of the humanities, in which it is a peripheral point. But it jumped out because I tweeted a similar observation a few days ago. https://www.chronicle.com/article/There-Is-No-Case-for-the/242724 …pic.twitter.com/0xYRlaJOhZ

If that essay reads at first as advocating the abolition of humanities education—bear in mind that the author is a Lecturer in Medieval Latin at the University of Edinburgh.https://www.ed.ac.uk/history-classics-archaeology/classics/staff-in-classics/profile_tab1_academic.php?uun=v1jstove&search=6&params= …

I thought "Meaningness" was about Values, so this is surprising to me. Basically every time you use the word "meaning" I would use the word "value". What am I missing?

I’m realizing it will take a fairly long essay to explain this. I thought it was kind of obvious, but responses on twitter show that it’s not at all.

I am fascinated by this suggestion that values might be mostly a modern invention. It makes sense that people who took social norms as given, and didn't feel free to negotiate social norms, wouldn't have as much use for values. They seem built for making points in such debates.

When/if I get time, I will try to figure out when and why the shift to “values” occurred!

Values gets to be a thing because globalism and the inclusion of different cultures as worthy of study is a relatively recent phenomenon.

Well, it seem that before the 1970s, people did talk about different “cultures” as the basis of conflicts. That was more accurate than the “values” language, I think. (cc: @St_Rev @edelwax)

Well, we took up science and reason to get people to agree. Maybe where we hit the stuff where that doesn't (and can't) work, we throw up our hands and toss it in a bucket labeled, "Values".

Yes, this is roughly my take, but I think we gave up too early!

1/2 He's making the claim the humanities are the essence of the uni, i.e., broadly a genotype:phenotype relationship that gets passed down. But unis have no essence, only semi-stable features. Harvard minus its English lit department would be a boring MIT, but a uni nevertheless

2/2 he's coming close to claiming that the humanities are defined by a class that's been at the core of power for ever and therefore (at least at the most prestigious venues) this class can continue to propagate itself. Which is probably true but uninteresting
