Ah, interesting—this distinction between acting and narration seems closely parallel to the move made in the founding of ethnomethodology (Suchman’s main framework).

Garfinkel, the founder, rejected existing sociology because it took roles and institutions as givens, as though they fell out of the sky.

So I haven’t read Garfinkel or Suchman (yet, they’re on the listen per your recommendation). I realized that as a product manager in tech I’ve been inadvertently practicing ethnomethodology for years. We call it contextual inquiry under “user research”.
