The problem is surely that people believe they have values, and express them as affirmations of identity: Trump voters & evangelicals are notorious for doing this. It's a tribal signal.

I still like it as a useful if overstated orthogonal take. It's important to remember ppl are not value maximizers, and talking in terms of values/preferences puts you in a mindset where you kinda implicitly think they are.
