I’d add: it’s not about “values.” Those are empty signifiers used merely to construct post hoc rationalizations.
Significant instead is the texture of personal experience: different according to social position.

That sounds like the paths/mechanisms people take, values are convenient labels for where they end up. And I'm sure pragmatism plays a part, but none of that makes values any less real.

I'm sure there are plenty of objectionable things you could find in the concept of "values" (eg -- the way they tend to disallow themselves be questioned) but I'm not sure which ones are on your mind, and why they should support throwing the whole concept out.
