Nobody has any “values.” This is a complete myth; one that does more than anything to drive the destructive culture war. (Anyone know of a good write-up of this? If not, I guess I ought to do it; the confusion seems near-universal.)

I'll bite. Something separates blue-state cosmopolitan pour-over hipsters from coal-rolling red-state gun humpers. If it's not "values" (and maybe that is an oversimplification) what is it?
-
Different experiences of social interactions and the patterns of their consequences; different opportunities for life courses; which imply different incentives and therefore different pragmatic interests. Or so it seems to me?

can't values signify the texture of personal experience?

Well… I don’t think they do signify that, typically. I don’t think they really signify much of anything (hence “empty signifiers” or “floating signifiers”). Their meaning is not in denotation, but in the practice of post hoc justification.
