2/2 was at the local police station premises with this thing called a ‘phone card’. You didn’t insert it anywhere, you called an operator who was a real person who then made the call and connected you up. It cost about £20 for a few minutes iirc and the connection was dreadful.

1/2This brought back memories for me too. I remember taking 2 days out from work to call my Mum in UK on her birthday, from India in 1990. First I had to get to the town (Patna) which took most of a day. Then had to go through a load of red tape to get to use the telephone which>
