well at least they're aware of it. in 100% of my recent experiences trying to find a sangha I saw about 10% of their energy put into anything I would associate with Buddhism and 90% put into progressive social justice activismpic.twitter.com/JQygXVaEEa

typical scenario is like this: walk into a temple, sit for meditation, after sitting someone in a robe stands in front of the room and says "hi everyone, there will now be a meeting about checking your white privilege and then we'll serve tea and cakes"

I honestly thought original sin was a Christian doctrine. I have no idea how it made it into these Buddhist communities. Baptism seems like a more elegant solution than an ideological struggle session though.

cc: @VincentHorn @Meaningness hope I'm not being rude or presumptuous to cc you here, if so please indulge me. I'm honestly asking for advice. Do you really need a sangha? I've never been much of a joiner anyway. Is solo practice viable?

I honestly don’t know whether you *need* to. I meditated for 20 years before I did. I made more progress in the first two months after starting Shambhala Training than I had in 20 years solo.

But, you are right that most non-ethic American Buddhist sanghas are saturated in SJW. There are exceptions, but finding one would be difficult, and the chance of one being in your area is small.

An alternative would be working with a teacher remotely (over video chat) who won’t do the SJW stuff at you. Even finding one of those might be a bit of a challenge, but there definitely are some.

Current white American Buddhism is best understood as a branch of liberal Protestant Christianity. The underlying ideas are all Calvinist. There’s some superficial Orientalist mumbo-jumbo on top, but you can safely ignore that. No one takes it seriously.

(I’m trolling slightly here, but looking at it this way does help understand many otherwise-inexplicable features.)
