Lucy Keer added,
Evey time math class started to get actually interesting, the prof would say “if this were a foundations course, we’d ask such-and-such a question” which was exactly what I wanted to know. “So, which IS the foundations class,” I asked. Prof looked surprised. No one ever asked b4
Prof gradually realized dept didn’t have one. “You could try the philosophy department, I guess,” he said doubtfully. “Or maybe Harvard has one you could audit.” (Neither did.)
I *did* find a philosophy of physics course, which was great, and came very close to applying for a masters in it... didn't try and find a maths one though!
What I really wanted, though, was to do physics, *and* talk about foundational questions, in an integrated way
I might be a mathematician now if the analogue had been available!
The integrated version is slowly getting easier to find in physics thankfully, especially in quantum foundations
Last year I found these people who do exactly the thing I always wanted https://rethinking-workshop.org
Cool… this reminds me of the bit in Khun about the chaotic period when a paradigm starts looking shaky, and increasingly wacky ideas become possible to consider, out of desperation.
Physics looks to me, as an outsider, like it’s crumbling around the edges. Whereas math, though built on sand, still looks solid—unless you dig around the baseboards.
