Rationalists say: show us some practical thing this “enlightenment” is good for, then maybe we’ll be interested. Obviously, this totally misses the point. But… Isn’t that a reasonable question?

Zen and Theravada often fetishize kensho/stream-entry as The Big Deal. Vajrayana takes it as just the initial insight that makes the real work possible. “The real work” *should* have demonstrable practical consequences:https://vividness.live/2012/09/25/mastery/ …

I don’t know! The circumstances are a bit of a long story, which I’ve actually never told. I think they probably played some role, but in general it’s inexplicable when/why it happens. Although there often is some cognitive component.

This is a classic. There’s a sort of pun involved, on “emptiness” and “reflection” and “moon”, all of which are central metaphors in Buddhist thought. Recognizing that this was funny probably triggered the experience—but is not at all the experience itself http://www.ashidakim.com/zenkoans/29nowaternomoon.html …

Well, there’s a fairly distinctive “experience” called “stream entry” that is thought to be unmistakable. Whether that’s true, and how important it is, may be open to question.
-
Supposedly you just can’t understand the point unless you’ve “had the experience.” I don’t know if that’s true. (I have “had the experience,” afaict, and suddenly thought I understood lots of things. So I can’t speak to the possibility of understanding them w/o it.)

Yeah… it’s not cognitive, though.

Well, a common analogy is tasting chocolate for the first time, after reading many descriptions of what it is like.
