I fervently and constantly wished math profs would say *anything at all* about what we were doing and why and what it meant. But no, it was always only “here’s the next theorem”…
… and I pretty much got kicked out of the department for asking awkward questions about “what is this, anyway?”

Yeah, that's a real problem. I try really hard to always provide that sort of background and perspective and "why"ness. But it's actually quite challenging to do that well. And many people don't really try.
